MISSION STATEMENT AND PURPOSE
The Colwich Community Library exists to have a positive impact on the quality of life of all the citizens in the area by using our resources and cooperating with other information agencies across the state to satisfy the reading and information needs of the citizens.

The library is a member of the South Central Kansas Library System.

HISTORY
The minutes from the first library board meeting for the Colwich Community Library ended with, "Feeling that we had taken a giant step forward toward our new library the meeting was adjourned." The date was February 27, 1961, and the present staff and board hope that these giant steps in library service continue today and into the future.

The first library building was a small one-room school west of the present building. It was a happy day when the library moved into the present building in January of 1989.

LIBRARY BOARD
The library is a conbined City and Township library and the governing board consists of 12 members, 7 of whom live in the City and 5 in Union Township. The board meetings are held in the library on the third Tuesday of each month except June, July and August and are open to the public.

SERVICES
In addition to the books, tapes, and videos which are a normal part of a library's collection, the Colwich Community Library also offers 65 cake pans for almost any special occasion.

The Citywide Garage Sale Day in April is coordinated by the library. The fees for registration, publicity, maps and signs for the sales make up the library's major fundraiser. Early morning shoppers may also enjoy the Yoder cinnamon rolls and coffee sold by the library staff and board.

The Summer Reading Program for young readers in the area begins on the first Saturday in June and continues until the last Saturday in July. Children in kindergarten through third grade receive a prize for every 5 books they read. Their goal is to read 20 books during the program. The older readers are trying to read for a total of 24 hours and pick a prizefor every 6 hoursofreading. To qualify for prizes, the books must be checkedout from the Colwich Library. Activities are scheduled for Wednesday mornings in July. There is a story, craft and maybe some surprises.

Story Hour is an 8-week program, usually beginning the second to last Monday in October, for the children old enough to go to kindergarten the following fall. The programs are held on Monday or Tuesday mornings. Enrollment information is sent out in the September Library Newsletter. The second session starts in February for another 8 weeks.

There is a Christmas Story and Craft Time held the afternoon of the same Saturday that Santa makes his annual visit to Colwich.
