Construction has begun on a new park at the easternmost edge of town. Click the image below to enlarge it, or download a PDF file.

UPDATE January 2009
The 3,100 linear foot hike/bike path is finished and it diagonals across the park, along the west side of the pond from 53rd Street over to 167th Street. That project was largely funded with a Kansas Dept. of Transportation grant. The City is constructing shade structures along the path and will soon install benches and picnic tables made from recycled tires. The recycled tire items were acquired with a matching funds grant from the Kansas Dept. of Health and Environment. The 1,600-foot trail along the southern edge of the park was partially funded by a health initiative grant from the Sunflower Foundation and was made possible with an easement granted by ICM on it's property. Soon, a covered fishing dock and ADA access to it will be installed with funds from a Kansas Dept. of Wildlife and Parks grant. The city partners with the Kansas Dept. of Wildlife and Parks to stock the pond with catfish, bluegill and largemouth bass during the summer. A state fishing license is required for anyone over the age of 16.

The stockpiled dirt is currently being removed and will be used in several local projects, including the Colwich Elementary School and Sacred Heart Church additions.

Westar Energy sent its Green Team to town in November 2008 to help Colwich volunteers plant 44 trees that Westar donated. The city tree farm is doing nicely, and we hope to transplant the trees to the park soon.

The Colwich Ball Club has completed the sale of one of its former fields to the Renwick School District and is eager to begin construction on new fields in the park. The City and Ball Club will be working together on this first phase.

The Park Development Committee also continues to search and apply for grants, and will start some fundraising projects soon.

Change is coming, and you can be part of it!
